Web hosting – FAQ

What exactly is web hosting?

Whether a large or small business, an institution or private user, anyone planning on creating an online presence will require the appropriate storage space for their future website. This is where web hosting services come into play: the provision of storage space for a website by a hosting provider (also known as a provider). Such storage space is referred to as web space. The provision of web space on a server (a computer designed for this purpose), as well as providing the necessary network connections, is usually done at a cost. To put it simply: the customers rent web space from a web hosting service provider.

In order to be able to offer customers the highest technical standards at such cheap prices, Maroon Hosting provides web hosting in the form of shared hosting.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept credit or debit cards, PayPal, bank transfers, and Direct Debit. The first payment must be made by credit or debit card, PayPal, or bank transfer.

Do I need to purchase a domain name to get started?

No, if you already have a domain name, you can simply type it in when making an order and the system will ask you whether you wish to transfer the domain name to Maroon Hosting or update the nameservers to ‘link’ your existing domain to your new hosting service with us.

If you don’t already have a domain name, you can purchase one when you order your hosting through Maroon Hosting, or you can purchase one from another provider and point the nameservers to that.

Can Maroon Hosting migrate my existing websites for me?

Yes. We have a dedicated migrations team who will move your websites from your existing provider to us.

We would need access to your old hosting provider.

Once you have placed an order for the hosting, please open a migration ticket in our client area.

Can you migrate my email accounts?

Yes, we can migrate email accounts.

What PHP versions would I be able to use?

Through CloudLinux we provide patched versions of historic PHP versions, and also the latest stable versions. This means you can run everything from PHP 5.2 to PHP 8.

To change the PHP version on your account, log-in to cPanel and click ‘PHP versions’ from there, you can select an available version from the drop-down list.

Can I have SSH access?

Yes – by default SSH access is available. Note that when you create your own packages you will need to enable it for your plans as well if you’d like to provide it for your customers.

The cPanel username and password can be used for SSH. We use the default port 22.

What is the best plan for my WordPress website?

The best WordPress plan for your website would depend on your business goals and budget.

For many users just starting out, the Essential package is the perfect place to begin. It contains ample resources for a new site, is well-optimised for WordPress and you can be up and running in just a few minutes. For users with an established site, perhaps with thousands of visitors per day or with more complicated eCommerce needs, you may need to look at our more advanced packages which come with more resources or even our Managed Dedicated Cloud Servers which provide a dedicated hosting environment for your site.

Is there a difference between web hosting and cPanel?

Web hosting is a service that makes your website accessible on the internet, while cPanel is software that makes the management of the hosting services more efficient and user-friendly. cPanel is not essential for web hosting, but it makes it much easier to manage your hosting account and website. If you don’t have much technical knowledge, cPanel is definitely the way to go.

Renewable energy

We use a mix of public cloud providers. At the bottom of this page we outline, and link to, the energy policies of each infrastructure provider. We are almost certain that every single server we provision is powered entirely by renewable energy. Google, Microsoft Azure, Digital Ocean and Amazon operate their own wind farms.
